Relationship Between Body Composition, Leg Strength, Anaerobic Power, and On-Ice Skating Performance in Division I Men's Hockey Athletes

Potteiger, Jeffrey A; Smith, Dean L; Maier, Mark L; Foster, Timothy S

Abstract

Potteiger, JA, Smith, DL, Maier, ML, and Foster, TS. Relationship between body composition, leg strength, anaerobic power, and on-ice skating performance in division I men's hockey athletes. J Strength Cond Res 24(7): 1755-1762, 2010-The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between laboratory tests and on-ice skating performance in division I men's hockey athletes. Twenty-one men (age 20.7 ± 1.6 years) were assessed for body composition, isokinetic force production in the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, and anaerobic muscle power via the Wingate 30-second cycle ergometer test. Air displacement plethysmography was used to determine % body fat (%FAT), fat-free mass (FFM), and fat mass. Peak torque and total work during 10 maximal effort repetitions at 120°·s−1 were measured during concentric muscle actions using an isokinetic dynamometer. Muscle power was measured using a Monark cycle ergometer with resistance set at 7.5% of body mass. On-ice skating performance was measured during 6 timed 89-m sprints with subjects wearing full hockey equipment. First length skate (FLS) was 54 m, and total length skate (TLS) was 89 m with fastest and average skating times used in the analysis. Correlation coefficients were used to determine relationships between laboratory testing and on-ice performance. Subjects had a body mass of 88.8 ± 7.8 kg and %FAT of 11.9 ± 4.6. First length skate-Average and TLS-Average skating times were moderately correlated to %FAT ([r = 0.53; p = 0.013] and [r = 0.57; p = 0.007]) such that a greater %FAT was related to slower skating speeds. First length skate-Fastest was correlated to Wingate percent fatigue index (r = −0.48; p = 0.027) and FLS-Average was correlated to Wingate peak power per kilogram body mass (r = −0.43; p = 0.05). Laboratory testing of select variables can predict skating performance in ice hockey athletes. This information can be used to develop targeted and effective strength and conditioning programs that will improve on-ice skating speed.

About Sean

images-25    Sean Skahan has been a strength and conditioning coach since 1998. During that time he has worked with several athletes who are now playing in the NHL, NFL, and MLB. Sean received his Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) from U-Mass Boston in 1998. After that, he received his Masters in Kinesiology (M.Ed.) from the University of Minnesota in 2000. He became a Certified Strength an Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.) in 1999.

In the July 2010, volume 24, number 7 issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, there is a great study- Relationship Between Body Composition, Leg Strength, Anaerobic Power, and On-Ice Skating Performance in Division I Men’s Hockey Athletes.  I actually try to read these journals whenever they are delivered to the house.  Usually, I will scan the table of contents for studies that really spark my interest.  Obviously, any studies that are related to hockey, I am going to read.

This study was done to look at relationships between specific lab tests and skating performance.  The subjects were 21 Miami of Ohio University Hockey players.  They were measured for body composition, force production in the quadriceps and hamstrings (isokinetic), and anaerobic power through a 30-second Wingate test.   On-Ice skating was measured during 6 timed 89 meter sprints where the fastest sprint and the average times were used in the analysis.

The results said that that %fat was “moderately” correlated to average skating times, while a greater %fat was related to slower skating speed.  The average on-ice times also correlated to peak power per kilogram body mass Wingate scores.  Basically, the study was able to say that “Laboratory testing of select variables can predict skating performance in hockey athletes.”

A couple of things that I really like about this study are that it does re-enforce some tests that I use/would use for hockey players.  I think that hockey players should be as lean as possible.  Honestly, I really haven’t seen too many pro players with body fat levels above 10% (taken with the Skyndex calipers).  The Wingate test, although it is brutally hard, has always been a favorite of mine.

I actually remember meeting with Eric Cressey a few years ago and he asked me what tests, in my opinion, correlate with hockey speed and performance and my answer was body composition and Wingate scores.

Should strength and conditioning programs for hockey include trying to be as lean as possible and improve leg power?

 I certainly think so.

Review of the 35 U22's (86-89 birth years) who started the 2007-2008 season in the NHL

There were over 4,000 elite players in the world in the 1986-89 birth years group, of which 3,150 players were in the CHL or NCAA, that wanted to play in the NHL at 18.

Of these 4,000 elite players only 3 played full time in the NHL in what would have been their first year of NCAA hockey and only 13 played in the NHL in what would have been their 2nd year of college hockey.

There are 690 full time NHL players in the NHL during the 2007/2008 season.
