games against perennial top-20 team #19 Stony
Brook, three games against ranked opponents at

Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase at the new
Consol Energy Center, future home of the
Penguins.
Said head coach Jason Evans, “We’re very pleased
with where we are right now. Being asked to
join the ESCHL, one of the top leagues in the
country, has definitely opened up some doors for
us, recruiting and otherwise. We’ve also kept
open several dates to play our established
rivals, and we’re hoping to bring in some teams
from the newly formed GLCHL to round out our
schedule.
“We’d also like to thank the teams of the ECHL,
and specifically Commissioner Bill Shannon, for
allowing us the privilege of playing in the
league for the past five seasons. The ECHL has
been a great fit for us and has helped us get to
where we are today, but it was time for us to
move on. Having said that, our guys really want
to go out on top by winning our fourth
consecutive regular season title and third
consecutive championship.”

Harrington College Icebergs Become Newest
Affiliate
FGCU Hockey expands its Canadian Connection!
September 12, 2008
It is with great pleasure that the FGCU Hockey Team welcomes the Harrington
College Icebergs as a new affiliate.
|
|
Harrington
College is based out of Oka, Quebec, Canada and has grown to become one of the
country's premier training programs for aspiring hockey players. The College
houses four teams including a Junior "A" Developmental Team which
competes in the America East Hockey League. Director of Communications Matt
Maida commented on the new affiliation by saying, "Harrington College is a
first class program, which will undoubtedly provide more exposure for FGCU
Hockey to Canadian athletes looking to play quality college hockey." With
the new affiliation, Harrington College will travel to Florida annually to play
a weekend series against the FGCU Eagles Hockey Team. The games will provide the
coaching staff the opportunity to get a first hand look at the Icebergs and will
give the Harrington College players an opportunity to
explore Florida Gulf Coast University. Harrington College Head Coach Dan
D'Astoli explains the purpose of their program by stating: "At Harrington
College we make sure elite hockey players get the opportunity to pursue and
devlop their hockey skills in an environment that values both academic
excellence and sound personal development" The Icebergs join the
Mississauga Hornets from Canada and the Space Coast Hurraices from Rockledge,
Florida as the three teams exclusively affiliated with the FGCU Hockey program.
All three of these programs will prove to be invaluable as they continue to help
develop potential FGCU Hockey players. The Harrington College Icebergs have
captured the Victoria Cup in both 2007 and 2008, which is awarded to the
champion of the America East Hockey League (AEHL). The AEHL is one of the newest
Junior hockey league in North America and includes the following member teams:
Team Ulysse, Eastern Pennsylvania Junior Bucks, St. Lawerence Lions, Dover
Seawolves, Lionel - Groulx Nordiques, and Trois-Riviers.

America East Hockey League
AEHL
Teams past and present

America East Sets Sights on Inaugural Season
2005-06-20
America East formed as a college
development league for aspiring student athletes, is progressing quite well as
it prepares for the upcoming inaugural season. Programs have reported good
results in recruiting players for their teams as they embark in this new era of
eastern Junior A hockey.
The primary goal of America East
is to develop and promote a highly competitive league that promotes its players
to college and professional teams. The AEHL will to provide talented and dedicated
hockey players an opportunity to play competitive hockey at the Junior “A”
level. America East is the first Junior League sanctioned by the North American
Amateur Association (NAAHA). The NAAHA currently sanctions the “AAA”
Metropolitan Boston Hockey League.
The key components of the
AEHL mission statement are as follows:
1. Player Testing
2. Player Development
3. College and Major Junior Exposure
America
East has teamed up with PEAC Performance to test all its league players and
develop an API (athletic performance index). PEAC physiologist and
skill-mechanics expert Ron Johnson has developed the world’s most precise
sport specific evaluation and development system. The API will be provided to
all players pinpointing skills that need improvement and allow for comparison to
his peers across the country. This provides our players with an alternative way
to measure abilities besides scoring statistics. The API is also made available
to over 40 participating NCAA college programs enhancing our player’s
exposure.
The AEHL is currently
comprised of eight teams, with interest in joining the league strong. The teams
will play a 50 game league schedule; participate in 2 showcases, host a league
All-Star game, then conclude with the AEHL Playoffs in April.
Each league member is
eager to start the season and bring a competitive alternative solution to hockey
as usual in the East.

FORMER
NHL DEFENSEMAN BOBBY DOLLAS TO COACH WEST ISLAND HOCKEY ACADEMY’S AEHL
TEAM
Montreal, Canada, (Wednesday,
August 17, 2005) – West Island Hockey Academy have announced that former NHLer
Bobby Dollas will be their AEHL team’s assistant coach.
Mr. Dollas, drafted in the first round, played 646 NHL games, 300 AHL
games and 45 games in the IHL. Dollas
won the Eddie Shore Award as the best defenseman in the AHL in 1993 and the
following year won the gold medal with Team Canada at the World Championships in
1994. He also has won 2 Calder cups in the AHL.
Dollas spent his development years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey
League and the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League, where he won the Air Canada Cup
with the Lac St Louis Lions (formerly the West Island Lions).
He won the World Junior Championships in 1985, taking home his first gold
medal with Team Canada.
Bobby Dollas evolved out of the
same program that West Island Hockey Academy did. The Lac St Louis Lions (established in 1976), who later
changed their name to West Island Lions, has won 3 gold medals and 2 silver
medals at the Canadian championships (Air Canada Cup) over the years.
“We (West Island Hockey Academy) in partnership with the West Island
Lions, experimented over the last 3 years to craft a development model and Bobby
Dollas was a key member in the research project that has yielded what may be one
of the most successful development programs in the world”
“Building upon the strengths of
the AAA program (West Island Lions) we increased the practice to game ratio to 5/1.”
In a type of research project that started in 2002, we brought some of
the top hockey players from all over the world and trained them in parallel with
the Lions” said Bobby Dollas.
The
first results to the research project indicated that the international player
illustrated faster individual development. “I believe that this
accelerated progress can be mostly attributed to the higher ratio of practice to
games and the fact that the International team played against older and
stronger (physically) teams. Both groups (International & Lions) were
approximately the same age, the same skill/talent level and all
practices were together (on and off-ice).
As
well, in games, the International players were all given equal ice time, as it
was believed that this would result in the best individual development (long
term objectives) as well as a unique team experience. Whereas
with the Lions, the coaching staff gave ice time to the players they believed
could help the team win the game (short term objectives).
“Accomplishments
that I am very proud of this year” said a proud Dollas “are, the
International team defeating one of the top Quebec Junior AAA teams (Champlain
Cougars) 3-2 at the end of the year and the advancement of the International
players to the junior level.” “One
of our players in particular, Brian Henderson, who is turning a lot of heads in
a Junior camp as we speak, came to our program last year playing the game with
his head down all the time.” “This
impacted on his skating and his vision for the game”
“We worked on these issues all year and by the end of the year you
could no longer recognize him as the same player”.
Bobby
Dollas said that “…the high practice to game ratio while training
with Lions and my one year with Team Canada, is what enabled me to enjoy
the success I had in the NHL.” “It
is amazing when you think that that Midget AAA team has put over 70 players in
the NHL, including myself”
“Mr.
Dollas, who is also coaching at the semi-professional level, will be a key
instructor for the Academy at practice.” announced the team’s GM Regis
Gresseaux. “Bobby’s attention
to individual details and his commitment to development through practice will be
what these players need”
The
Head coach for the team has yet to be announced from the Academy.
